Vassago FAQs

Why Buy A Vassago ?
A. Riding a Vassago makes you cool.
B. 'Cause your neighbor spent 3 times what you did on their bike, and you can out-climb them.
C. 'Cause good beer is as important as good geometry.

Whats with the "RideLikeTheDevil.com" thing?
First and foremost, the phrase "ride like the devil " has been become a common  cry throughout American history (look it up) and  it personifies our approach to aggressive, ninja-like mountain biking. But for you slightly more academic, pseudo-dorky types, heres why we really use it:

After Napoleon's world wide reign of power, the Duke of wellington, as the underdog, took on "the man" and kicked some literal ass at The battle of Vittoria, thus ending Napoleon's domination of Spain. The Duke was out numbered and few believed in his ability, most importantly, his enemy.

As he charged his men into the vastly larger, established army, he cried "Ride like the devil, men!".

Sure they wore funny hats back then, but that's about as bad-ass as it gets. In short, never under estimate the competition.

What about the "devil" thing? Are you evil?
Well, sometimes...But religion has no place in mountin biking unless you're in 2nd place or get hurt real bad. Either way, we leave it up to you.

What singlespeed gearing should I run on your bikes?
check out our gear calculator.

Why Steel?
The best steel will never be as light as hi-tech aluminum. But the best steel is just that. Steel, With all of today's technology, nothing surpasses the feel of quality steel. A well made steel frame is so great that it is all we make. You can shave a pound of weight and 2 lbs of soul at any major manufacturer. If your looking for the real deal, your at the right place.

What is the headtube/seat tube/top tube/ length/width/weight/color/preference...
If you have a question about our frames, we are more than happy to help you out. If you don't find the answers on the product pages on this site, shoot us an email. We check email all the time and will get back to you ASAP.

Coffee or Tee?
Mostly Coffee, black like the night. Or really fruity-fancy chai, green froo-froo tea.

Why do the brake cables route along the top of the top tube?
In true Vassago style, function over form. Some people think it gives a cleaner look to hide the cables under the toptube. Aesthetically, yes. However, we build our bikes around the trail experience first, then make it look pretty. We run the cables on top of the top tube, to allow easy portages or rock scrambling, with the bike over your shoulder. Function first, pretty second, if there's still room. Shifter cables route down along the downtube and under the BB shell.

What length seat post is best?
First off, the longer your post, the stronger the seat post/frame joint will be. That said, as long as you have about an inch of seatposts, inside the seat tube, extending below the toptube/seattube junction, you will be fine. The actual length of the post depends on how high you like your saddle.

What size bottom bracket do I need?
The Bottom bracket shell is 68mm wide. You can use most modern x-type cranksets that can fit either 68mm or 73mm BB shells. If you are retro-cool and using a carriage bottom bracket, you will want a 68x113. This means the bearings fit a 68mm shell and the spindle is 113mm wide. The spindle length required, can be effected by the crank you use, so double check your combination with your Local bike shop.

Why doesn't your geometry look like I expect?
Because we built our frames around three things: You the rider, and two big-ass wheels. Standard geometry expectations be damned.

Most companies are trying so hard to stick as close as possible to 26" bike geometry that they end up with what we refer to as "Monster-truck 29ers". Big, tall and clumsy with tons of clearance issues. These are the bikes that have given a bad name to would-be 29er converts.

We build our bikes like "Trophy trucks". Long and low, we stretch the wheels out and place the rider's center of gravity low in the center with the wheels way far out to front and back. We fully utilize the bigness of the 29er knobbies.

To those that don't know, that might mean offensive angles and strange tube dimensions. To them we say; Ride a Vassago.

The Gear Plugs on my Jabberwocky seam to slip under certain braking, what can I do?
Some of the Jabberwockies have a heavy application of clearcoat on the dropouts. The Aluminum GearPlugs can slip on the smooth drop-out finish.

  • Using 80 grit sandpaper, roughen up the dropouts and the GearPlug surfaces where the make contact.
  • We also recommend a Shimano XT quick release or a Hope quick release. Both of these, have a strong cam and deep teeth for a strong bite.

How much is shipping to my zipcode ?
Please contact your local dealer for current shipping rates.

Do you ship International?
For sales outside of the US48, please contact any of our international dealers.

Do you sponsor riders or have a team?
Yes, If you are an experienced endurance racer or XC racer on a 29er (of course), please send your race history, experience and any other info you think is important to teams@vassagocycles.com .

Please don't call to followup for at least 3 weeks. Our team manager is burried with race submissions and often takes weeks to get to all of them. Thanks!

Why does every Tom, Dick and Harry company suddenly have a 29er?
'Cause it's easy to stuff big wheels in a 26 inch frame, and accountants know they sell. Don't be fooled. If you don't buy a Vassago, make sure you still buy a dedicated 29er. Viva la big ass hoops!
